Explanations 1. freakwater is an old-timey appalachian country band fronted by two women, janet beveridge bean (who's also in an alt-rock band called eleventh dream day) and catherine irwin. their name is just freakwater, not freawater girls; i had to add the "girls" part to make the line rhyme. :-) 2. "alejandro" is alejandro escovedo (he's on the cover of the issue of ND with Mary Lou in it, so you can find out more about him in there if you care to do so) 3. "cutrufello" is mary cutrufello, a honky-tonk singer and guitarist from texas who has played in jimmie dale gilmore's band and recently got a record deal of her own. 4. waylon, patsy and gram are waylon jennings, patsy cline and gram parsons, all of whom are fairly legendary figures in country music. 5. ween is actually more of an indie-rock band, but they put out an album called *12 golden country greats* last year in which they sort of took their shtik to the alt-country audience. 6. "son wilco" is sort of a joke on two bands, son volt and wilco, that grew out of the early '90s band uncle tupelo, who are mentioned back in the first verse. (the first album by uncle tupelo was called *no depression*, named after a song from the 1930s by the carter family; that's where we took the magazine's name from as well.) 7. "emmylou and buddy too" are emmylou harris (well-known country singer who began her career with gram parsons) and buddy miller, who plays guitar in emmylou's band (and also steve earle's recently); buddy also has a couple really good records of his own out. 8. "scott miller and scott miller" are two different guitarists with the same name who both record for E-Squared Records, a label co-owned by steve earle. there's a scott miller in a band called the V-Roys, and a different scott miller in a band called 6 String Drag; they just happen to be on the same record label. (ironically, there's yet another scott miller in a band called the loud family, but they're more of an alt-rock/pop band rather than alt- country.) ....the whole last verse is sorta restructured to be about a discussion board on America Online called "No Depression", which is sort of a gathering place for fans of alternative-country music. (the magazine i publish was sort of a print-version outgrowth of this discussion board; the board existed before the magazine did.) the reason i refer to it as a "folder" in that line in the song is because the visual graphics on AOL's message board service are such that each board is designed to look like a little manila folder; thus, the people who regularly post there tend to just call it a "folder" most of the time.
