STEADFAST

There's a girl named Pearl
Pumping premium off the Jersey pike
She got a smile like Judy Garland
As a child if you know how to act right
Last chance screamers with out-of-state-plates
Looking for some heaven around Pearl's gates
As light lines split the sky
And made the morning vibrate. . .

The dark dawn withered
As we glanced towards distant thunder
There was a new sun rising
But to some just a familiar wonder
Then clouds exploded and rain
Came with a crash
People traded for canoes
With used Pontiacs
But most got refused. . .too many stacks
Not even cadillacs

  Telephone poles split and spit
  Out live sparks
  The world trade centers collided
  Down into Needle Park
  Pyramids and palaces
  Were likewise bound to fall
  No long standing landmark
  Was even recognisable at all

And yet the old house stands
Though its been shifted to a tilt
You can still see the waterline
Where the river spilled
Over the banks and into the valley
Down through town and right up my alley
It could've been the end
Or just time to clean it up again. . .
When shorelines change will beaches
Resist the pounding waves
Will preachers still be preaching
Or will no one have anything to say
Well. . .even when the mountains de-range
I want to find you just to see
If you're still around, steadfast, and free
