On Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, ten bands from eight different cities will converge at the Off Broadway Club in the Soulard district, to showcase what's being dubbed "Twangcore", Americana, or "Alt-country." The event will feature a mix of singer-songwriters, bluegrass musicians and raucous rock n' roll acts who have all put their own unique spin on the genre. The homegrown festival has its roots in Postcard 2, a web discussion site that began as a casual meeting place for roots rock enthusiasts who followed artists such as Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, and Uncle Tupelo. As roots rock makes a comeback, the site has grown to include over 500 members, many of whom are musicians, DJs, and music industry professionals from around the world. "This event is the first of its kind to grow out of a grassroots community of music fans and industry-related people who came together on the internet," says Junior Barnard, Twangfest committee member and guitarist/vocalist for the Lawrence, Kansas-based band Fear & Whiskey. "It was only natural to take our discussions one step further by organizing an event where we could showcase the music we talk about so much." Each of the featured acts includes at least one musician who participates in Postcard 2's sometimes-encyclopedic debates on topics ranging from the state of the music industry and the glitzing of country music to favorite bootlegs, albums and authors. According to Matthew Benz, committee member and guitarist for the Columbus, Ohio-based Sovines, Postcard 2 is just one thing the bands have in common. "All of the acts emphasize being less slick and commercially-oriented than what's coming out of Nashville's corporate studios right now. We're returning to real country and western roots and we think the simple, raw power this music holds accounts for its growing popularity." The ten acts appearing at Twangfest are: Belle Starr (Country-Folk Rock n' roll, St. Louis MO); Cash Hollow (Country Folk duo, San Franciso CA); Fear and Whiskey (Honky-tonk and Rockabilly Swing, Lawrence KS); Edith Frost (Vocalist and Writer, Chicago IL); Gasoline (High Octane Roots Rock, Chicago IL); Ghost Rockets (Maximum Rhythm and Bluegrass, Hoboken NJ); One Riot One Ranger (Bluegrass and Acoustic Country, Columbus OH); Roy Kasten (Singer Songwriter; St. Louis MO); The Sovines (Big Rig Rock n' Roll, Columbus OH); Texas Meat Purveyors (Bluegrass and Fine Potted Meats; Austin TX). A special guest appearance by Bloodshot Records' Waco Brothers will round out the event. The show will attract Postcard2 followers -- some from as far as Europe and Australia -- as well as other alt-country fans and independent label A & R reps in search of fresh talent. A compilation album featuring Twangfest bands will be released by the Columbus, Ohio independent label Semi-Tone Records. The album will be available at the festival and by mail-order from Semi-Tone. Twangfest is organized by a six-member volunteer committee.
