Mighty Sad Song ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Freight trains and pain and the sound of the rain, The beat of your heart close to mine. Are the things that I'll know in the next place I go, And I'll never remember your name. There was a kid that I knew, we were classmates at school. We weren't best, but friends nonetheless. The war took his brother, the news took his mother. Think he took it that life can be cruel? I don't know where I'm going, yet I know where I've gone. This voice sings from a heart that was there When the storm cloud came with its fiery refrain, And the verses of a mighty sad song. Heading down to Skid Road where the "Have-Nots" all go With the "Haves" that still go there to play. They coexist well, like heaven and hell... Though the hell is quite real, you know. Given personal choice is there one person's voice Crying out for a home on the street? What mother would choose for her child to lose Or on hearing the news would rejoice? I don't know where I'm going, yet I know where I've gone. This voice sings from a heart that was there When the storm cloud came with its fiery refrain, And the verses of a mighty sad song. I know a child so gay who went to first grade okay, With a spirit that could not be contained. But the teachers ignored him while the bullies would swarm him, And the scars still remain to this day. So do we learn from the present or relive the past? The answer isn't right or it's wrong. Either I'm getting older or this world's getting colder, Yet we ought to do something and fast. I don't know where I'm going, yet I know where I've gone. This voice sings from a heart that was there When the storm cloud came with its fiery refrain, And the verses of a mighty sad song. He could sing, he could play; a prodigy some say, A son who shone brilliant and bright. Fame came too soon, bringing fortune and spoon. He was buried the following day. They say, "That which don't kill us just makes us grow stronger." How strong do I still have to grow? I've got two-ton boulders on both of my shoulders And I can't take this nonsense much longer. I don't know where I'm going, yet I know where I've gone. This voice sings from a heart that was there When the storm cloud came with its fiery refrain, And the verses of a mighty sad song. Freight trains and pain and the sound of the rain, The beat of your heart close to mine. Are the things that I'll know in the next place I go, And I'll never remember your name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Copyright © 1995 Jim Hinde folkbone@mindspring.com
