The Down By The Old Mainstream Songbook V 1.0

This is Version 1.0 of the Down By The Old Mainsteam Songbook. Many thanks to all those people who took time to work out these songs. Its not perfect, certainly the songs I transcribed aren't. But we have the right key, and the right basic chords, we may lack a bit of detail here and there but hey this is Golden Smog, its about having a bit of fun with simple arrangements which you can pick up quickly. If you can provide more detail, and/or corrections let me know I'll be happy to put them up.

Golden Smog - V

I've got two versions of this... basically the same chords. The first is my own attempt, the second is another version I've found. The interpretation of the lyrics is a bit different. Not sure which is correct, as I'm English I find the American accents a little difficult. But I've listened again and I still think my lyrics are quite close... anyway make up your own mind

Intro - F G C

Verse 1

           Am                    D
When I was down she was full of advice,
            G                   C
cause she'd been there once or twice,
       F                        C
with a ring on the side of her nose,
        F               C
wearing other people's clothes.
              Am                       D
She'd had her highs and she'd had her lows,
       G            C
but in between she show-oh-ed,
         F                       C
when she smiled everything else died,
    F                G
the feeling of good vibes

Chorus

{Piano Bit - Guitar sounds like a D A7 F G chord sequence }

           F
As if in a dream,
    G             Am
The one and only V,
           F
As if in a dream,
    G             C
The one and only V.

Verse 3

She had her shots at breaking hearts,
She used to wait on us down at the bar,
Never took as much as she gave,
still giving to this day.
Staying up half the night
Mood swings, yeah we cried.
On a cold December day,
Vera went away.

Repeat Chorus

Harmonica Solo

Staying up half the night
Mood swings, yeah we cried.
On a cold December day,
Vera went away.

Repeat Chorus

Intro G C repeated

[G/B]Yester[C]day is just the [G/B]day before [C]today
[G/B]Sat and [C]watched it, [G/B]watch it slide [C]away
Yesterday [D]cried, [C]ooh, yesterday [G/B]cried [C G/B C]

Looking at me through those tiny eyes
Why did you do it, why did you have to lie
Yesterday cried, ooh, yesterday cried

[Am]All you ever [C]wanted
and [G/B]all you ever [C]need ...
Ooh, yesterday [G/B]cried[C G/B C]

My main line's gone a different way
I woke up, and it was yesterday
Yesterday cried, ooh, yesterday cried

Times been good, times have been bad
When I was with you, you know it made me sad
Yesterday cried, ooh, yesterday cried

All you ever wanted
and all you ever need ...
Ooh, yesterday cried
Yesterday cried

By the shape of things I'm in
I'll just watch it slide away
Yesterday, yesterday, yesterday

Radio plays, I'm coming down
Road stretches out, but it ain't, Lord I'm home
I'm not big on being amazed
I'm in a haze, I'm lost, nowhere bound
And all my friends they jumped the wagon
Parked today, tails a-waggin'

And I can't seem to get it right
But I wanna get off right now
I can't seem to get it right
But it's all so wrong, somehow

Did you think I wouldn't return
Did you think I wouldn't return
Did you think that I was dead
Did you think that I was dead
Thought I'd crash and burn
Did you think it was my turn

She Don't Have To See You
Golden Smog

This is a simple song which proved tough to work out.
Its a two guitar problem.. The lead guitar plays a large part of the song,
while the simple rhythm guitar pattern is obscured. Anyway the G Em G changes are
short on the Em, heavy on the G. But really this a rough sketch which I hope someone
will improve upon. As always let me know.
 You always [G]thought[Em G]
 In a town[Em] this [C]size [G Am]
 That you al[G]ways [Em G]
 Have a place[Em] to [C]hide [G Am]
 But you [G]can't [Em G]
 Can't treat [Em]your [C]woman right [G Am]
If you got [G]another [Em G]
One on [Em]the[C] side [G Am]

 [Am]She don't have to[Bm] see you
 [C]She don't have to[D] see you
 To see[G] through you [C G]
 You used to brag
 To all your friends
 Telling'em all about
 Your other love
 But you never thought,
You never thought she'd been giving away
 That very thing
That you've been getting plenty off

 [Am]She don't have to[Bm] see you
 [C]She don't have to[D] see you
 To see[G] through you [C G G7 Dm]

[C]She can tell by the look in your eye
That [Bm]you've been telling her lies
[C]She don't have to see you
 to [D]see through you

 How many times
You come home late at night
 You remember all the times
 Got caught sneaking in
 And your woman
 She never said a word
 But she knew exactly
 Where you've been

 [Am]She don't have to[Bm] see you
 [C]She don't have to[D] see you
 To see[G] through you [C G]

"Red-Headed Stepchild"

I've got two versions of this, the first is an improved version of my sad effort. The second is my attempt. Slight difference in the lyrics, probably down to my inability to resolve the American accents.

Hans,

I looked at your vast collection of songs, and I think I can add the
following Golden Smog and Steve Earle songs.

Enjoy,

Chris

Verse 1

Verse's are A F#m preceded by little riff twice

Hello darkness come on in,
let me light a candle.
Imagination's running,
hands start to tremble
Knows enough to know not/what to believe,
what is real and what it seems to be.
Knows what keepin' him from being free,
Right outside your door.

Chorus

Bm G/B Bm G/B
Don't run away red headed stepchild,

Bm G/B A D
I can only promise you won't find your way back home.
In another room there's laughing
Entertaining strangers
The walls in there dont breathe no more,
But they're keeping us some angels. ( last two lines I unsure of )
Laughed so much he almost cried,
stranger offers him a ride,
City blocks they roll on by,
Never coming back.

Repeat Chorus

Guitar Break

Tear your picture off my wall,
I hate to look at strangers,
{Them thats burned have been forewarned} - this line is unintelligable
Keep me out of danger
Knows enough to know not to believe,
what is real and what it seems to be.
Knows what keepin' him from being free,
Right outside your door

Repeat Chorus

This is a simple song,
I think the verse is basically F but played as a little piano riff,
on guitar I find a gentle F Bb F is nice way to simulate it.
You may want to ignore the trailing Bb F in the chorus though

[F]Williamton [Bb]angel smi[F]les
[F]Carries them [Bb]through the mi[F]les
[F]Throw all [Bb]his on gi[F]rls
[F]Fire that [Bb]never bur[F]ns

[Am]Williamton [G]angel, don't come [F]down[?Bb F]
[Am]Carry his [G]feet up off the [Bb]ground
Ooh, Williamton [F]angel[?Bb F]

Williamton angel appraised
Licking the tears from her eyes
Night is turning to day
Who needs sleep anyway

[Am]Williamton [G]angel, don't come [F]down[?Bb F]
[Am]Carry his [G]feet up off the [Bb]ground
Ooh, Williamton [F]angel[?Bb F]

Am G F Bb F
Am G F Bb F
Ooh, Williamton [F]angel[?Bb F]

Williamton angel is gone
Leaving behind a song
Deny it was a return
Things we got to be learned

[Am]Williamton [G]angel, don't come [F]down[?Bb F]
[Am]Carry his [G]feet up off the [Bb]ground
Ooh, Williamton [F]angel[?Bb F]

Williamton angel
Ooh, Williamton angel
Williamton angel

Well, here is a great little tune off of "Down by the Old Mainstream",
probably one of the best records released that year. The whole song
pretty much consists of a few different little riffs, and then a few
chords for the chorus. Have fun with it and improvise if you want.
