The Knitter

Glad to meet you, lYe been waiting
I'm the one they call the knitter
I can wind you like a wool thread
And knot you up into a sweater

Turn it rightside out, the layers are unfolding now
On the underside this flesh becomes my hands
Twisting, ever winding 'till the fleece becomes a lamb
Now I have begun

All the rooms will soon be overrun
tll be caught inside the tangle
Yarn over again
One strand that never ends

I made a little stitch, wasjust like whispering
Knit a hundred more, sounds like crying
I mised the lamp and needles drawn, saw the empty face
Wrong the racks and skeins I couldn't find mine

In the rooms are now so overrun
I sing still inside the tangle
I draw the loose ends down in my aching hands
and start unwinding I'm unwinding
I'm unwinding everything I've ever made

I have cast a thousand rows
I'll knit you something
All better now

Glad to meet you, lYe been waiting
I'm the one they call the knitter
And the very best have come unraveled
But I don't mind
No, I don't mind

Megalith

Long before it began it was already done
The rain and the sun
dropped by tethers one by one
The rain and the sun
Tiny people whird around in the rain their god sent dawn

Deep in the earth was a city of stones
Laid up straight as an arrow
Unseen hands have locked them away
In a hillside carved out hollow

Under the same sky
a thousand years they would lie
In the rain and the sun

They danced in a  line by the light of the moon
Strapped to the beast of the pasture
There were rocks and stones, flesh and bones
and doven hooves in the asters

Under the same sky
a thousand years they would lie
in the rain and the sun

Gather round and raise the stone beneath the gown of heaven
Eternally under th blue
Together we'll be lying
In the rain and the sun

I came this way on a broken track
With all I can carry on my back
For these who lie beneath the moss
When the daylight fades I'll be digging

Under the same sky
A thousand years they would lie
In the rain and the sun

Down by the Water

Down by the water where the big dam is standing
I met my darlin last night
While the pale moon was sinking we lay there drinking
And listening to our hearts

Down by the water with the steel turbines humming
I held my darlin last night
When the big sluice was open the river went running
And turned on the lights

Down by the water I thought I new
Down by the water, quick as the dew
Down by the water

Cool was the air through the folds of his hair as
He told me to listen once more
I heard the wind making waves on the water
That reached for the shore

So many reasons like drops from a raincloud
He could have been talking all night
Instead hejust left me and I watched the river
Drain out of sight

Down by the water, I thought I knew
Down by the water, quick as the dew
Down by the water

Down by the water where the big dam is standing
I met my darlin last night
While the pale moon was sinking I lay there drinking
And listening to my heart

Down by the water, we fell apart
Down by the water, right from the start
Down by the water, quick as dew
Down by the water

Light in the Road

You're watching to see his headlights coming up the road
Telling stories with your fingers crossed
You're running I been told
You sayyou never lie, I knowyou're raising cain
Shouldn't have given you my own name
For all rve done, I could never breakyou

Leftovers on a pile of dishes, wash them up and go
You stay off of those dirty backroads I knewyears ago
Run off to your room
Make sure it fitsjust right
When he comes around I know somethings coming down

There's a light out in the road
There's a light out in the road
There's a light out in the road
I know he's out there shining foryou

Slide all the way across the front seat
Slide right into his
You're waiting to feel his skin beneath your fingertips
I have seen your hands run up and down his back
I don't begrudge you the very thing I'm remembering

(chorus)

Shouldn't have given you my own name
For all I've done I could never break you

I walked up and over this place many years ago
If their eyes should fall on this face they'd say I told you so
But I recall the days when all it used to take
Was a whisper as I walked by
Kept this town in'chains

(chorus)

Last Barn Dance

Later on, when the leaves are scattered
We will look ath the world with older eyes
Here we are on a road bound to no one
You and I, you and I, you and I

You pick it up and place it square upon your shoulders
I circle 'round and do my best to make it fall
Never borrow, never bend, never gargain
We'd loose it all, loose it all, loose it all

Yes my darlin', you can have the last dance
Just pick me up off the floor
Truly, when I can gave you my hand, I'll take yours

Pave the road along the way with good intentions
Gather up your pearls in hand and watch them shine
Listen to me, when the time comes you can smile as they go
'Cause in the end, it's what you know, it's what you know

Yes my darlin' you can have the last dance
Just pick me up off the floor
Truly, when I can give you my hand I'll take yours

Later on, when the leaves are all scattered
We will look at the wolrd with older eyes
Here we are on a road bound together
You and I, you and I, you and I
You and I, you and I, you and I
You and I, you and I, you and I

Wishing Well

Throw it down the wishing well
Throw it down into the water
Throw it down the wishing well
Watch it sparkle down under the water

She's standing in the garden with a white dress on
Sflver roses in her hand
Blossoms grow in deeper shade forever waiting for the rain
Lift her up to face the sky and she's in bloom ever after

Throw it down the wishing well
Throw it down into the water
Throw it down the wishing well
Watch it sparkle down under the water

She's standing in the garden with a red dress on
Silver locket in her hand
Blossoms in the blazing sun forever waiting for no one
He is gone, in his hand her favorite flower, ever after

She's standing in the garden with a black dress on
Silver dagger in her hand
Blossoms fall, there she cries, I'll keep you where your body lies
Forever more'with roses red and bleeding hearts - none will have you

Throw it down the wishing well
Throw it down into the water
Throw it down the wishing well
Watch it sparkle down under the water

That I Might See

Tuesdays at nine, come rain or come shine
He comes to take me driving
Takes me away down all the old roads
All the old places that we've been
When I was a young girl how fast td run
No days of doubt, just running after

He's at the old place all by himself
Someone is turning my bed down
We used to live in a palace of sorts
We used to sleep with our boots on
But that's all gone now, come sit by me
And draw back the curtains that I might see

Closing my eyes, I see them again
All the old places that we've been
Tuesdays at nine, come rain or come shine
He comes to take me driving
But that's alright now, come sit by me
And draw back the curtains that I might see

Waiting for Sara

You asked me without a single word
Lucky that I heard
It was in the wind and now I understand

I'm sleepy I'll stay up for awhile
We're part of it now
And when it's done I bet well wonder how

I don't feel the strain
But it's surely there
It's the work we're here for
And like I said, I'll help you unload

There was something moving 'cross the field
So through the grass I ran
But it would never show itself to me

I watched you from farther down the row
Bending down so low
Digging ever deeper in the ground

He doesn't even know
When he works that plow
He's what I'm here for
And like I said, tll help him unload

A matter of interest left to me, if anything can be
Will such a fine, unbroken line
Ever break beneath the weight
Or will I firid him planting in the spring?

Spellbound

Light shines through a crack in the dooor
Lying awake as she stares at the moon
Sees something over the rooftop
Rears something inside of her room
Deep in a dream she sees it
Out in the field, a red pony to ride
In the morning its footprints and ashes inside

There's a man lying by the road face down
Angles left no footprints on the ground
She wakes, hears a voice two doors down
Under the tree, gifts all around
She's spellbound for a moment today

There's a bonfire under the bridge
Just light a match and the candle's agIove
They sit on oak chairs at the table
They sit in milk crates in the snow
There's a whole world inside there
A whole other world in the lights of the tree
And that was the very last year she believed

There's a man lying by the road face down
Angels left no footprints on the ground
She wakes, hears a voice two doors down
And under the tree gifts all around
She's spellbound for a moment today

Paper Wings

My faucets don't work
There's a hole in the wall
Behind an old picture of you
Somehow do you see that Ws all fallen down
in ruins around me

Trying to find the most beautiful things
Flying on paper wings
Is there another way?

Go on now, ifs your turn to shine
You don't need to drag me along
tll do what I can, but I tremble at the thought
That well miss it again farther on

Trying to find the most beautiful things
Flying on paper wings
Is there another way?

Very Last Time

So good to see you my darim'
It isn't the same
Don't feel the thrill that I used to when I hear your name
You never changed, baby I did
So I'll bear the shame

Having you in my arms
With doubts in my mind
Swore I'd love you forever
Why's this feel like the very last time

Where does it go, I don't know
But it feels like ifs gone
Worries me, honey to think my feelings were wrong
Will I be able to trust what I love from now on

I got you in my arms
With doubts in my mind
Swore rd love you forever
Why's this feel like the very last time

Shouldn't be holdin' you now, baby I know
Why ain't I got the strength enough to let go

I got you in my arms
With doubts in my mind
Swore I'd love you forever
Why's this feel like the very last time
The very last time
